Unreal standards

Sunday, May 25, 2025

Social media has created a culture where perfection is glorified and reality is often distorted. Many young users are constantly exposed to carefully edited photos and idealised portrayals of wealth, beauty and lifestyle. As a result, they begin to believe that such standards are the norm. This constant comparison can lead to feelings of insecurity, anxiety and dissatisfaction with one’s own life.

The pressure to keep up with these unrealistic images has made many teenagers feel as though they are falling behind. Whether it is physical appearance, success or popularity, they feel the need to meet impossible expectations just to be accepted or admired online. It is essential for families, schools and influencers to help young people understand that what they see online is often far from reality. Encouraging self-acceptance and critical thinking is key to protecting their mental and emotional health.
