The Commissioner Karachi Office hosted a meeting with goods transporters, chaired by Sindh Senior Minister and Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, on Saturday.
Chief Secretary Syed Asif Haider Shah, Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Karachi Commissioner Sayed Hassan Naqvi, and other officials attended the meeting. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Memon said that recent violent incidents had caused significant financial losses to transporters. He announced that the government had formed a committee to address the matter, which would submit its recommendations within ten days.
He stressed that transport plays a crucial role in the economy, and the government must resolve the issues transporters face. “Burning vehicles doesn’t solve problems; it’s a serious crime,” he said. He expressed sorrow over the deaths of four transporter drivers, noting that taking a life punishes an entire family.
Senior Minister Memon declared that these acts amount to terrorism. He confirmed that the government will register cases under anti-terrorism laws against those responsible for setting vehicles on fire. He added that authorities are identifying the culprits using CCTV footage.
He firmly stated that the government will not allow anyone to block roads or engage in hooliganism. “Those who harm the public aren’t friends of the country; they’re terrorists,” he said.
