This refers to the letter ‘Limited options’ (April 21, 2024) by Syed Falak Zahra. Alas, the same educational problems and difficulties are present for Pakistani students in all smaller cities and areas. As a university student in the Hazara area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, I face many difficulties. The biggest difficulty is financing my studies, my parents cannot afford my fees but have taken out loans to help pay for my higher education. That being said, it often feels as though I am not getting any value for these financial sacrifices.
There are few quality teachers here and we hardly have any libraries or other essential facilities. Then there is the lack of hostel amenities, poor transport options and other such issues. I think the provincial governments should have full control over education and they should have the funds available to improve standards throughout all universities. Each province must ensure an adequate percentage of spending on the educational sector. If need be, they can slash non-developmental expenses by 50 per cent or more to meet such targets. Our future is more important than any perks or privileges.
