Lest we forget

Saturday, May 04, 2024

When our neighbour’s house was being renovated, one worker had the job of taking a load of bricks to the upper storey then coming back down to carry up another load. And this was during the humid month of July. He’d do this all day as long as the construction work went on. Imagine digging roads or laying pipes in sweltering heat or freezing cold. These labourers are true examples of earning an honest income through hard work, sweat, and blood.

Imagine doing this for a measly amount of money with no medical coverage or health insurance. The least we can do for these people is treat them with respect. One hopes that the people and the government have the good sense to set a liveable minimum wage for all such professions and ensure the dues are paid in a timely manner.
